The stress of the holiday season affects all of us in many different ways. Stress promotes inflammation which has a negative impact on the gastrointestinal (GI) system. The GI system is not only responsible for much of our immune function but also plays a huge role in our neurotransmitter activity and production. A large portion of serotonin,  our primary ‘feel-good’ neurotransmitter, is produced in the gut. Translation? An unhappy gut can mean depression and anxiety in addition to increased risk of illness, bloating, and discomfort.

Here are a few tips for a Belly Blissful holiday season:

  1. Avoid added refined sugar whenever possible. That means saying no to some of the candy, cookies, and pastries being passed around the office!
  2. Breathe. Take a few deep soothing breaths before eating to calm the nervous system and allow for optimal digestion.
  3. Support a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut by taking a high quality probiotic daily.
  4. Limit alcohol which is a toxic pro-inflammatory substance.
